The inspiration for this garden came from the virtues of self-sustaining Mediterranean gardens. The homeowner, an avid plant collector, participated extensively in the design process to create a similar garden for her south facing, sloped front yard. The back garden is an English cottage garden theme, with lush plantings surrounding a glass conservatory and a formal fountain designed by the homeowner.
These vastly different gardens fit their individual conditions perfectly and create an arboretum-type landscape on the expansive property. The homeowner also uses the garden as an educational tool. Completed in 2003, the garden is open to the public for national and local garden tours, and for horticulture students to visit and learn from.
